Aside from the game, the commercials are the most anticipated part of Super Bowl Sunday. At 3 million dollars a pop, the 30 second ad better be memorable if you want your money back for that commercial.
Commercials mean so much to a company, not many people would know what E*TRADE is, but now who doesn't recognize their famous talking baby or Geico with the gecko, the caveman and all their other commercials.
This year during the big game, FOX stated that they sold 90% of the commercial space, and GM told the press they would return after a two year hiatus.
During the game, Coca-Cola, PEPSI and Doritos each ran six commercials. While Budweiser only ran five ads, in my opinion, they stole the show. Even though they didn't have my favorite commercial, all five of their ads were top quality. Budweiser's "Wild West" commercial was their best. When Peter Stormare reaches for his sidearm, we expect bullets to start flying, not an Elton John sing-along to "Tiny Dancer". In the end it was a kind of letdown, but it was cute enough to get the point across.
Doritos had one of the best ones of the night, with the bulldog who charged the sliding glass door to get the chips. It had looked like the dog would run into the door, but he ran through the door and ate the chips on top of door and his caretaker.
The "Eminem-Brisk commercial" wasn't bad either, but that's just because it's Eminem and anything he does is instantly awesome!
My personal favorite though was the "Volkswagen-Darth Vader commercial"; it was a very cute commercial that definitely got its money worth. A little kid dressed as Darth Vader tries using his "Jedi" powers to move things when his dad comes home, and the kid runs outside to meet him as he gets out of his Volkswagen. When the father goes inside, his son stays and tries to manipulate his car with his powers.
From inside, the father sees this and uses the car remote to start the car and turn on the lights. Of course, this makes the kid think he did it and he looks around amazed. It's a cute commercial and very well acted by whoever is in that tiny costume, and does a good job of showing off the car without clubbing you over the head with a list of features.
Although this Super Bowl had good commercials, it had its duds too. For once Geico did not run any new ones, and their commercials are the funniest, and there were a fair share of flops.
The worst was the "Teleflora-Help me, Faith commercial". I hate to pick on this commercial because it's for flowers, but it's kind of inappropriate and just plain boring.
Super Bowl XLV has come and gone, and while I have no clue who won the game, what I do know is every single commercial that aired. This was a great year for commercials overall, with most of them being pretty darn good, some of them being not a complete waste of time, and only a handful that made me angry.
