With the start of the 2009 fall semester, there are many new things and many new people; from the new Student Success Center, to new students, and even new faculty. One of which is Dr. Karen Stubenbort.
Dr. Stubenbort joined the Butler County Community College family at the start of the fall semester from the University of Pittsburgh, and she brings experience from Edinboro University and Point Park University as well. Dr. Stubenbort teaches two Sociology classes and one Contemporary Social Problems class for BC3, while she still teaches one class for Pitt.
Dr. Stubenbort also mentioned that a new program is in the works for a bachelorette program that would provide students with a degree in social work that can be obtained at the BC3 main campus through the University of Pittsburgh, using Pitt faculty. The program is expected to be ready for the fall semester in 2010. It will be very similar to the current criminology program that is already in place. There will be more information to come during the BC3 open house on Oct. 15.
"People have gone out of their way to make me feel welcomed here," Dr. Stubenbort stated. "Students at BC3 are getting a really good education, because the teachers here love teaching!"
Dr. Stubenbort obtained her PHD in Social Work from Pitt in 2003. Dr. Stubenbort also holds two masters degrees. She received a Masters Degree in Child Development in 1986 and another Masters Degree in Social Work in 1996, both of which are from Pitt. She received her Undergraduate Degree in Psychology from Point Park University.
She also brings a lot of outside experience in her field as well. She has worked with the field of social sciences since 1978, when she helped found Parents Anonymous (a self-help program for potentially abusive parents) which eventually became today's Family Resources of Pennsylvania. Her most memorable work came from the crash of USAir Flight 427. The plane crashed on September 8, 1994 in Beaver County killing all 132 people on board. Dr. Stubenbort helped children who had lost their fathers and one child who lost his grandfather in the crash.
Dr. Stubenbort brings a lot of experience and skills to BC3 and she will be a wonderful asset.
